Original vs ₹500 Copy: How to Spot a Real Magnetic Ball Watch

Search for a magnetic ball watch online and you’ll find two very different things: watches at ₹400 to ₹900 on marketplace listings, and real ones at ₹9,000 and up. People understandably ask what the difference is, and whether the cheap one is “the same thing”.

It isn’t. Here’s what actually sits inside each, so you can judge any listing yourself.

What you are really buying in a magnetic ball watch

The idea is simple: there are no hands. A magnet on an arm under the dial drags a steel ball around the track, and the bigger ball is the hour. Our explainer on how a magnetic ball bearing watch works covers the mechanism.

Simple to describe, hard to build well. The ball has to keep moving smoothly for years, in heat, humidity and after knocks, without sticking or falling off its track. That takes a decent movement, a properly machined case and a magnet-and-ball pairing that has been tested.

Seven ways to tell a real one from a cheap copy

  1. The movement is named. A genuine listing tells you what’s inside, for example a Swiss RONDA or a Japanese MIYOTA quartz movement. A copy says “high quality movement” and nothing more.
  2. The specifications are complete. Case size in mm, case material, strap material, water resistance rating, warranty. Missing specs usually mean there’s nothing good to mention.
  3. Water resistance is stated as a rating. “3ATM” or “5ATM” is a real rating. “Waterproof” with no number is marketing. See our water resistance guide.
  4. There is a real warranty. A brand that stands behind the watch gives you a written warranty and someone to contact. A marketplace reseller usually gives you a 7-day return window and nothing after that.
  5. The photos are of the actual watch. Copies reuse the brand’s own press photos. Look for listings with multiple angles, the case back, and the strap.
  6. The seller has an address. A website, a contact page, an invoice with GST. If the only way to pay is UPI to a personal number, walk away.
  7. The price makes sense. A watch with a branded quartz movement, a metal case and a real warranty cannot be sold at ₹500. Something has been removed, and it’s usually everything.

What the price difference actually buys you

  • A movement that keeps time. Branded quartz movements are accurate to within seconds a week and run for years on a battery.
  • A case that survives daily wear. Alloy and steel cases with proper finishing, instead of plated plastic that wears through in months.
  • Balls that stay on the track. The part most copies get wrong. A ball that keeps jumping off makes the watch unreadable.
  • Service after the sale. A battery change, a strap replacement, an answer when something goes wrong.

“But it looks identical in the photo”

It will. Photos are the one thing a copy can match perfectly, because they’re often the brand’s own. What photos can’t show is how the watch runs after six months, whether the plating is still there, or whether anyone picks up the phone when the ball stops moving.

Every EUTOUR watch ships with an invoice, a 1-year official warranty and a team in India you can actually reach.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some magnetic ball watches only ₹500?

Because the movement, the case material, the finishing and the warranty have all been cut. They often look similar in photos and behave very differently after a few months.

Are cheap magnetic watches dangerous?

The magnet itself is small in any of them. The real risks are poor plating reacting with skin, and a battery compartment that isn’t properly sealed. Our guide on whether magnetic watches are safe covers magnets in detail.

How do I know an EUTOUR watch is genuine?

Buy from eutour.in or an official marketplace store. Every order comes with an invoice and a 1-year official warranty.

What is a fair price for a good magnetic ball watch in India?

Roughly ₹9,000 to ₹14,000 for one with a branded quartz movement, a metal case and a real warranty.
