The Seiko NH35 movement

The NH35 is one of the most widely used automatic calibres in the industry, and for good reason: it is robust, serviceable by any competent watchmaker, and self-winding with hand-winding and hacking both supported. Twenty-four jewels reduce friction at the pivots, and a full wind gives roughly 41 hours of running time. If you wear the watch daily it stays wound on its own; if you leave it off for two days it will stop and need a shake or a few turns of the crown to restart.

Why an automatic mechanical watch behaves differently

A quartz watch keeps time to a few seconds a month. An automatic mechanical watch is accurate to a range of seconds per day — typically within about -20 to +40 seconds daily for an NH35, which settles down once the watch is worn regularly. That is not a defect; it is the nature of a mechanical escapement. What you get in exchange is a movement with no battery to replace, a sweeping second hand rather than a ticking one, and a mechanism that can be serviced and kept running for decades.

Sapphire crystal and 5ATM

The J048 uses sapphire rather than mineral glass — the harder material, and effectively scratch-proof against keys, desks and door frames. Combined with a 5ATM rating, it is the most durable specification in the EUTOUR range. 5ATM covers rain, sweat, hand-washing and brief accidental immersion, but not swimming, hot showers or steam, because heat cycling is harder on gaskets than water alone.

The foldable magnetic clasp

The strap uses an upgraded foldable magnetic clasp instead of a traditional butterfly clasp. It closes with a positive magnetic pull and adjusts along its length, so getting the fit right does not require punching new holes in the leather. The 20 mm leather band is wearable up to 195.2 mm, and the 40 mm case suits wrist sizes from roughly 15 cm to 19.5 cm.

Care and winding

Wear this automatic mechanical watch regularly and it stays wound. If it has stopped, rotate it gently for 30 seconds or hand-wind the crown, then set the time. Keep it away from strong magnetic fields such as speaker magnets and induction hobs, which can affect a mechanical hairspring in a way they cannot affect quartz. Wipe the case with a dry cloth and keep the leather strap dry.
