Watch Water Resistance Explained: 3ATM vs 5ATM (and Monsoon Care Tips)

“Is this watch waterproof?” is one of the most common questions watch buyers ask. The short answer is that no watch is truly waterproof. Watches are water resistant to a certain level, and that level is shown as an ATM rating on the case back or in the product details.

Here’s what those numbers really mean, what you can and can’t do with your watch, and how to protect it through the Indian monsoon.

What does ATM mean on a watch?

ATM stands for atmospheres, a unit of pressure. One ATM is roughly the pressure of 10 metres of water, so you’ll often see 3ATM written as 30 m and 5ATM as 50 m.

This causes a lot of confusion. A 30 m rating does not mean you can dive to 30 metres. The number comes from a pressure test in a lab with the watch held perfectly still. In real life, moving your arm through water, jumping into a pool, or hot water from a shower creates pressure and stress that a still lab test doesn’t. So real-world use is always well below the number on the case.

Which EUTOUR watches have which rating?

Most EUTOUR fashion and magnetic ball watches are rated 3ATM. They handle rain, sweat and washing your hands, but should come off before a shower or a swim.

A few models are rated 5ATM for people who want more margin:

The rating for each watch is listed in the specifications on its product page.

Can I shower with my watch?

Even with a 5ATM watch, we recommend taking it off. Hot water and steam make the rubber gaskets (seals) expand and soften, and soap and shampoo wear them down over time. The watch may survive a few showers, but you are slowly weakening the seals that keep water out. Take it off, and it will last much longer.

Can I swim with my watch?

With a 3ATM watch, no. With a 5ATM watch, a light swim at the surface is within its rating, but for regular swimming a 10ATM or higher watch is the right tool. Never press any button or pull out the crown while the watch is wet or underwater. That opens a direct path for water.

Leather and wooden watches need extra care

Even if the case is water resistant, the strap may not like water. Leather absorbs water, stretches, stains and starts to smell if it stays wet. Wood can swell and lose its finish. For these watches, treat “water resistant” as protection against accidents, not permission to get them wet. Our wooden watch care guide has more detail.

Monsoon watch care: 7 simple habits

  1. Wipe it dry. After you come in from the rain, dry the case and strap with a soft cloth.
  2. Swap the leather strap. In heavy monsoon weeks, a watch with a steel mesh or metal strap is the better daily choice.
  3. Check the crown. Make sure the crown is pushed fully in. A crown left out is the most common way water gets in.
  4. Avoid sudden temperature changes. Walking from a hot, humid street into a very cold air-conditioned room can cause fogging inside the glass.
  5. Store it dry. Keep watches in a box with a silica gel sachet (the small packets that come with shoes and electronics) to absorb humidity.
  6. Rinse off sea water. After the beach, rinse a water-resistant watch in fresh, cool water and dry it. Salt damages seals.
  7. Check the seals every few years. Gaskets age. Have them checked when the battery is changed, or every couple of years.

Fog or moisture inside the glass: what to do

A little mist that appears after a temperature change and clears within a few minutes is usually just condensation from humid air trapped inside. If it happens:

  • Take the watch off and leave it face up in a warm, dry place (not directly in hot sun, and never with a hair dryer or oven).
  • Put it in a closed box with silica gel sachets for a day.

If you see water droplets, or the fog doesn’t clear, water has got in. Don’t wait: moisture can rust the movement within days. Stop wearing it and contact us or a watch service centre so the case can be opened, dried and resealed.

If water resistance matters to you, look at the E024 M Series and the J048 automatic, both rated 5ATM. For any other model, the water resistance rating is listed on its product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3ATM waterproof?

No. 3ATM means splash resistant: rain, sweat and hand washing are fine, but showering and swimming are not.

Is 5ATM good enough for swimming?

For a light swim at the surface, yes. For regular swimming, choose 10ATM or higher.

Is 30 m water resistance the same as 3ATM?

Yes. Both describe the same rating. Despite the number, it is not suitable for swimming or diving.

Why does my watch fog up in the monsoon?

Humid air inside the case condenses on the glass when the watch cools suddenly, for example in a cold AC room. Short-lived fog is condensation. Fog that stays, or water drops, means water has entered and the watch needs service.

Does water resistance last forever?

No. Seals age with time, heat and chemicals, so water resistance slowly drops. Have the seals checked when the battery is replaced.
